Norman Dewis OBE, 1920 – 2019
We are sad to report the loss of Norman Dewis OBE, who has passed away on June 8th, aged 98.
A friend of the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, Norman Dewis was chief test driver and development engineer for Jaguar between 1952 and 1985. His career saw him achieve many great things for Jaguar, including breaking the land speed record for production cars in a Jaguar XK120 on the Jabbeke Highway in Belgium in 1953 and racing at Le Mans in 1955.
In 1971, he famously crashed the unique XJ13 prototype at MIRA during a promotional film shoot and was lucky to walk away from the crash unscathed. His development career spanned the XK140 to the XJ40, but he remained involved with Jaguar right into the modern day.
He will be sadly missed by the Jaguar community and the club sends its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
